সুগন্ধা নদীর তীরে অবস্থিত বরিশাল বিভাগের ছোট একটি জেলা ঝালকাঠি। প্রায় ৭৫৮ বর্গকিলোমিটার আয়তনের ছোট্র এ জেলার উত্তর ও পূর্বে বরিশাল জেলা, পশ্চিমে পিরোজপুর জেলা এবং দক্ষিণে বিষখালী নদী ও বরগুনা জেলা। স্থানীয় জনশ্রুতি অনুযায়ী অতীতকালে এখানে জেলেরা জালের কাঠি বিক্রি করতেন। জালের কাঠি কালক্রমে ঝালকাঠিতে রূপ নেয়। সুগন্ধা, বিশখালী, ধানসিঁড়ি, গাবখান, জাংগালিয়া, বাসন্ডা জেলার প্রধান নদী। উপজেলাগুলো হল- ঝালকাঠি সদর, কাঁঠালিয়া্ নলছিটি এবং রাজাপুর।

Jhalokati is a small district in the Barisal Division on the banks of the Sugandha River. Barisal district is bounded on the north and east, Pirojpur district on the west and Bishkhali river and Barguna district on the south. According to local legends, in the past, fishermen used to sell nets here. Over time, the mesh sticks turned into jhalkathi. Sugandha, Bishkhali, Dhansindri, Gabkhan, Jangalia, the main rivers of Basanda district. The upazilas are Jhalokati Sadar, Kanthaliya, Nalchiti and Rajapur.
