রাজধানী হতে উত্তরে সড়কপথে ১৫৯ কিলোমিটার এবং রেলপথে ১৮৩ কিলোমিটার দূরে ময়মনসিংহ ও কিশোরগঞ্জ জেলার কাছে হচ্ছে নেত্রকোনা। এর উত্তরে মেঘালয় গারোপাহাড়, দক্ষিণে কিশোরগঞ্জ, পূর্বে সুনামগঞ্জ এবং পশ্চিমে ময়মনসিংহ জেলা। কংস, সোমেশ্বরী, মগরা, ধলা প্রভৃতি এ জেলার প্রধান নদী। মগরা নদীবিধৌত এ ভূখন্ডটি অনেক টানেত্র বা চোখের কোণের মতো দেখতে বলে এ অঞ্চলের নাম নেত্রকোনা। প্রায় ২৮১০ বর্গকিলোমিটার আয়তনের এ নেত্রকোনার উপজেলা হচ্ছে-নেত্রকোনা সদর, আটপাড়া, বারহাট্রা, দুর্গাপুর, খালিয়াজুরী, কলমাকান্দা, কেন্দুয়া, মদন,মোহনগঞ্জওপূর্বধলা। |

Netrokona is 159 km north of the capital by road and 183 km by rail near Mymensingh and Kishoreganj districts. Meghalaya Garopahar to the north, Kishoreganj to the south, Sunamganj to the east and Mymensingh district to the west. Kangs, Someshwari, Magra, Dhala etc. are the main rivers of the district. The name of this region is Netrokona as the land washed by the river Mogra looks like a tanetra or the corner of the eye. Netrokona Sadar has an area of about 2610 sq km - Netrokona Sadar, Atpara, Barhatra, Durgapur, Khaliajuri, Kalmakanda, Kendua, Madan, Mohanganj and Purbadhala.

The ancestral home of Jaya Bachchan, the Bengali wife of the living legend of Indian cinema Amitabh Bachchan, is in Purbadhala upazila of the district.
