বাংলাদেশের স্থপতি ও জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবরের জন্মস্থান এ গোপালগঞ্জ জেলায়।
গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকারের বর্তমান মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী বঙ্গবন্ধু কন্যা শেখ হাসিনার জেলাও হচ্ছে এ গোপালগঞ্জ। রাজধানী থেকে ২৩২ কিলোমিটার দূরে। এর উত্তরে ফরিদপুর, দক্ষিণে পিরোজপুর ও বাগেরহাট, পূর্বে মাদারীপুর ও বরিশাল এবং পশ্চিমে নড়াইল জেলা অবস্থিত। গড়াই, মধুমতি, কালিগঙ্গা এ জেলার মধ্য দিয়ে বয়ে যাওয়া প্রধান নদী। প্রায় ১৪৯০ বর্গ কিলোমিটার আয়তন এ জেলার। জনশ্রুতি অনুযায়ী গোপালগঞ্জের পুর্ব নাম ছিল রাজগঞ্জ। মকিমপুর স্টেটের জমিদার দক্ষিণেশ্বরের রানি রাসমণি ত্থাকতেন কলকাতায়। বজরায় চড়ে তিনি মাঝে মাঝে আসতেন রাজগঞ্জে। একবার রানীর ভ্রমণসঙ্গী হয়ে তাঁর সঙ্গে আসেন প্রিয় নাতি গোপাল। কলকাতা হরে বেড়ে উঠা গোপাল রাজগঞ্জের প্রাকৃতিক দৃশ্যে মোহিত হন। রানী রাসমনি নাতির ভালোলাগার জায়গাটিকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখতে রাজগঞ্জ থেকে রাজ বাদ দিয়ে সেখানে গোপাল জুড়ে দেন। রাজগঞ্জ হয়ে যায় গোপালগঞ্জ।

The birthplace of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur, the architect of Bangladesh and the father of the nation, is in Gopalganj district.
Gopalganj is also the district of Sheikh Hasina, daughter of the present Prime Minister of the Government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh Bangabandhu. 232 km away from the capital. It is bounded on the north by Faridpur, on the south by Pirojpur and Bagerhat, on the east by Madaripur and Barisal, and on the west by Narail district. Gorai, Madhumati, Kaliganga are the main rivers flowing through the district. The district covers an area of about 1490 sq km. According to legend, the former name of Gopalganj was Rajganj. Rani Rasmoni of Dakshineswar, the zamindar of Makimpur State, lived in Calcutta. He used to come to Rajganj on a barge from time to time. Once the queens traveling companion came with her dear grandson Gopal. Growing up in Calcutta, Gopal was fascinated by the scenery of Rajganj. Rani Rasmoni left Rajganj to keep her grandsons favorite place memorable and covered Gopal there. Rajganj became Gopalganj.
