বরিশালের ইদ্রিলপুর পরগনার কিছু অংশ নিয়ে বর্তমান শরীয়তপুর জেলা। ঢাকা হতে সড়কপথে ১৩৮ কিলোমিটার দূরে অবস্থিত ঐতিহাসিক বিক্রমপুরের দক্ষিণের এ জেলার বিস্তৃতি প্রায় ১১৮১ বর্গকিলোমিটার নিয়ে। ব্রিটিশ আমলের ধর্মীয় সংস্কার মূলক ফরায়েজী আন্দোলনের নেতা হাজি শরিয়তউল্লাহ নামেই এ জেলার নামকরন হয়েছে। এর উত্তরে মুন্সীগঞ্জ, দক্ষিণে বরিশাল, পূর্বে চাঁদপুর ও পশ্চিমে মাদারীপুর জেলা। পদ্মা, মেঘনা, পালং এবং কীর্তিনাশা এ জেলায় প্রবাহিত প্রধান নদী।

The present Shariatpur district with some parts of Idrilpur Pargana of Barisal. Located 136 km by road from Dhaka, this district south of the historic Bikrampur covers an area of about 1171 sq km. The district is named after Haji Shariatullah, the leader of the British-era religious reformist Faraji movement. Munshiganj in the north, Barisal in the south, Chandpur in the east and Madaripur district in the west. The main rivers flowing in the district are Padma, Meghna, Palang and Kirtinasha.
