বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলে সমুদ্র উপকুলবর্তী একটি জেলা হচ্ছে বরগুনা। প্রায় ১৮৩১ বর্গকিলোমিটার আয়তনের এ জেলার উত্তরে ঝালকাঠি, বরিশাল, পিরোজপুর এবং পটুয়াখালী জেলা, দক্ষিণে পটুয়াখালী, পূর্বে পটুয়াখালী এবং পিরোজপুর ও বাগেরহাট জেলা। জানা যায় কাঠ ব্যবসায়ীরা নদী অতিক্রম করার জন্য অনুকুল স্রোত বাগোনের জন্য যে স্থানে অপেক্ষা করত সে জায়গাটিকে বলা হয় বরগোনা। সেই বরগোনা পরবর্তী্তে রূপ নেয় বরগুনা জেলায়। বলেশ্বর, পায়রা ও বিশখালী জেলার প্রধান নদী। উপজেলাগুলো হচ্ছে- বরগুনা সদর, আমতলী, পাথরঘাটা, বেতাগী ও বামনা।

Barguna is a coastal district in the southern part of Bangladesh. Bagerhat, Barisal, Pirojpur and Patuakhali districts to the north, Patuakhali to the south, Patuakhali and Pirojpur and Bagerhat districts to the south. It is known that the place where the timber traders waited for the favorable current to cross the river was called Bargona. That Bargona later took shape in Bagerhat district. Baleshwar, Payra and Bishkhali are the main rivers of the district. The upazilas are Barguna Sadar, Amtali, Patharghata, Betagi and Bamna.
