ইংরেজ আমলে নীল চাষের জন্য বিখ্যাত এলাকাটি পরবর্তীতে পরিচিতি পায় নীলফামারী নামে। রংপুর বিভাগের অধীনে এ জেলার আয়তন প্রায় ১৬৪১ বর্গকিলোমিটার। জেলার উত্তরে ভারতের কুচবিহার, দক্ষিণে রংপুর, পূর্বে লালম নিরহাট এবং পশ্চিমে পঞ্চগড় এবং দিনাজপুর জেলা। উল্লেখযোগ্য নদিগুলো হল তিস্তা, যমুনেশ্বরী, চিকনী ও ধাইজান নদি এ জেলা দিয়ে প্রবাহিত নদীগুলোর মধ্যে অন্যতম। উপজেলাগুলো হচ্ছে নীলফামারী সদর, ডিমলা, ডোমার, জলঢাকা, কিশোরগঞ্জ ও সৈয়দপুর।

The area famous for indigo cultivation during the English period later came to be known as Nilphamari. The area of the district under Rangpur division is about 1641 sq km. The district is bounded on the north by Cooch Behar in India, on the south by Rangpur, on the east by Lalam Nirhat and on the west by Panchagarh and Dinajpur districts. Notable rivers are Teesta, Jamuneshwari, Chikni and Dhaijan rivers which flow through this district. The upazilas are Nilphamari Sadar, Dimla, Domar, Jaldhaka, Kishoreganj and Syedpur.
