বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিণ পশ্চিমের বিভাগীয় শহর খুলনা। শিল্পনগরী নামে পরিচিত ও দেশের তৃতীয় বৃহত্তম শহর। প্রায় ৪৩১৪ বর্গকিলোমিটার আয়তনের এ জেলার উত্তরে যশোর ও নড়াইল, দক্ষিণে বঙ্গোপসাগর, পূর্বে বাগেরহাট এবং পশ্চিমে সাতক্ষীরা জেলা। রূপসা, পশুর, ভৈরব, শিবসা, ধরলা, ভদ্রা, কপোতাক্ষ এ জেলার উল্লেখযোগ্য নদ– নদী। উপজেলাগুলো হচ্ছে- খুলনা সদর, বাটিয়াঘাটা, দাকোপ, ডুমুরিয়া, দিঘলিয়া, কয়রা, পাইকগাছা, ফুলতলা, রূপসা এবং তেরখাদা। খুলনা নামকরণ নিয়ে অনেক কাহিনী প্রচলিত আছে। চন্ডিকাব্যের নায়ক ধনপতির দ্বিতীয় স্ত্রী খুলনার নামে নামকরণ হয়েছে। আবার কারো কারো মতে ভৈরব নদীর তীরে খুলনেশ্বরী কালী মন্দিরের নাম থেকে খুলনা নামটি এসেছে। আবার অনেকের মতে জেলার কপিলমনিতে খুলনার পুল নামে একটি প্রাচীন পুল ছিল। এই খুল্লনা থেকেই খুলনা নামকরণ হয়েছে।

Khulna is a divisional city in southwestern Bangladesh. Known as the industrial city and the third largest city in the country. It covers an area of 4314 sq km and is bounded on the north by Jessore and Narail, on the south by the Bay of Bengal, on the east by Bagerhat and on the west by Satkhira district. Rupsha, Pashur, Bhairab, Shibsa, Dharla, Bhadra, Kapotaksh are the notable rivers of the district. The upazilas are Khulna Sadar, Batiaghata, Dakop, Dumuria, Dighalia, Koyra, Paikgachha, Fultala, Rupsha and Terkhada. There are many stories about naming Khulna. The hero of Chandikavya is named after Khulna, the second wife of Dhanpati. According to some, the name Khulna comes from the name of Khulneshwari Kali Temple on the banks of the river Bhairab. According to many, there was an ancient pool called Khulna Pool in Kapilmoni of the district. Khulna has been named from this Khulna.
