রাজধানী থেকে প্রায় ১২২ কিলোমিটার উত্তরে জেলা শহর ময়মনসিংহ । ময়মনসিংহ শহরের আগের নাম ছিল নাছিরাবাদ।ষোড়শ শতাব্দীতে বাংলার সুলতান সৈয়দ আলাউদ্দীন হোসেন শাহ তাঁর ছেলে সৈয়দ নাসিরুদ্দিন নুসরত শাহকে এ অঞ্চল শাসন করতে পাঠান ।এরপর থেকে এ জায়গার নাম হয় নাছিরাবাদ। মুঘল আমলে মোমেন শাহ নামে এক সুফি সাধক ছিলেন এ অঞ্চলে।বলা হয়, নামডাক ও প্রভাবের কারনে সম্রাট আকবর তাঁকে দলভুক্ত করে নেন। ওই সাধকের নামেই পরবর্তী সময়ে এ অঞ্চলের নাম হয় মোমেনশাহী ।কালের বিবর্তনে মোমেনশাহী থেকেই ময়মনসিংহ নামের উদ্ভব হয়েছে বলে ধারনা করা হয়। ময়মনসিংহ জেলার উত্তরে গারো পাহাড় ও ভারতের মেঘালয় রাজ্য, দক্ষিনে গাজীপুর, পূর্বে নেত্রকোনা ও কিশোরগঞ্জ এবং পশ্চিমে শেরপুর, জামালপুর ও টাঙ্গাইল জেলার পুরানো ব্রহ্মপুত্র ও কংস এ জেলার প্রধান নদ-নদী ।
ময়মনসিংহ জেলার ১২ টি উপজেলা হল –ময়মনসিংহ সদর ,ভালুকা, ধোবাউরা,ফুলবাড়িয়া, গফরগাও,গৌরীপুর ,হালুয়াঘাট,ঈশ্বরগঞ্জ, মুক্তাগাছা,নান্দাইল, ত্রিশাল ও ফুলপুর। ময়মনসিংহ জেলার আয়তন প্রায় ৪৩৬৩ বর্গকিলোমিটার।

Mymensingh is a district town about 122 km north of the capital. Mymensingh was formerly known as Nasirabad. In the 16th century, Sultan of Bengal Syed Alauddin Hussain Shah sent his son Syed Nasiruddin Nusrat Shah to rule the region. From then on, the place was called Nasirabad. During the Mughal period there was a Sufi saint named Momen Shah in this region. It is said that due to his fame and influence, Emperor Akbar included him in the party. The region was later renamed Momenshahi after the saint. It is believed that the name Mymensingh originated from Momenshahi in the evolution of time. Mymensingh district is bounded on the north by the Garo Hills and the Indian state of Meghalaya, on the south by Gazipur, on the east by Netrokona and Kishoreganj, and on the west by Sherpur.
Old Brahmaputra and Kangs are the main rivers of Jamalpur and Tangail districts. Mymensingh district has 12 upazilas - Mymensingh Sadar, Bhaluka, Dhobaura, Fulbaria, Gafargaon, Gauripur, Haluaghat, Ishwarganj, Muktagachha, Nandail, Trishal and Phulpur. Mymensingh district has an area of about 4363 sq km
